DIMAPUR — The Konyak Union (KU) paid a courtesy visit to Director General of Police Rupin Sharma at the Police Headquarters, Kohima, on April 7.
During the interaction, the union conveyed its appreciation to the Government of Nagaland and the Police Department for ensuring fair and transparent opportunities for the youth through the recruitment of personnel into the Nagaland Police (GD) based on a competitive examination system, the KU stated in a press release.
The union stated that the “commendable initiative” reflects a strong commitment to merit-based selection, transparency, and equal opportunity for all eligible aspirants across the state.
While appreciating the existing recruitment mechanism, the KU expressed concern for aspirants with educational qualifications below Class 10, who often face difficulty competing on equal terms in written examinations with more academically advanced candidates.
It emphasised that such challenges may lead to discouragement among vulnerable youth and, therefore, urged the department to devise a practical and inclusive mechanism to ensure equitable opportunities for candidates from diverse educational backgrounds and marginalized sections of the state to serve in the Nagaland Police.

The union suggested the earmarking of a certain percentage of vacancies for sportspersons in police recruitment, in line with practices adopted in other states, to encourage young talent and promote a culture of sportsmanship among the youth.
In addition, it reminded the DGP regarding the appeal letter submitted to the Deputy Chief Minister (Home) on July 12, 2025, for the strengthening and upgrade of infrastructure under the District Executive Force (DEF), Mon, along with the enhancement of manpower.
The union further emphasised the urgent need for the construction of a fully functional Tiru Police Station and the augmentation of manpower, as the existing setup lacks the basic infrastructure required for effective functioning.
During the interaction, the KU apprised the DGP of the prevailing law and order situation in Mon district and expressed grave concern over the escalating menace of drug abuse, which poses a serious threat to the well-being, safety, and future of the youth.
It stressed the urgent need for the establishment of a robust, coordinated, and result-oriented drug control mechanism to effectively curb the proliferation and abuse of narcotic substances.
In this regard, the union urged for proactive measures, including establishment of new check gates in strategic border areas, particularly at Longwa Village (towards Pongchao, Arunachal Pradesh), Kangnyu Village, Chen area, and Monyakshu Village in Tobu area.
“These measures are deemed essential to monitor and regulate movement, prevent cross-border trafficking, and dismantle networks involved in drug peddling, thereby safeguarding the region from the growing drug menace,” it stated.
“The Konyak Union assured its commitment to supporting all progressive initiatives that uphold fairness, inclusivity, and youth empowerment in Nagaland. The Union earnestly hopes that its concerns and suggestions will receive due consideration from the authorities.”
