- DIMAPUR — Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio graced the
Konyak Heritage Complex inauguration-cum-Konyak Aoleang Monyu 2025 event as a
special guest on Friday at Leangha village in Mon district.
- An update from DIPR informed that Union Minister of State
for Education & Development of North Eastern Region Dr. Sukanta Majumdar
was the honoured guest, while Minister for Forest, Environment & Climate
Change, and Village Guards CL John was the chief host.
- “Rio thanked all the civil societies and the administration
headed by Deputy Commissioner Mon Ajit Kumar Verma and Leangha village for
their cooperation in the success of the completion of the complex. He said that
the complex will be handed to DUDA as a government agency but requested the
people to maintain it properly. He encouraged the people to protect, preserve
and promote it.
- “He urged the people to learn about themselves and their
customary laws and remember their ancestors while celebrating the festival with
peace and unity. He also pledged to construct a working women's hostel and
Konyak Union office at the Konyak Heritage Complex site,” it stated.

- Rio unveiled the monolith, it added. Later on, the chief
minister wrote on X that the Konyak Heritage Complex “is a development
initiative by the Nagaland government, aimed at empowering community growth.”
- “It features traditional morungs, modern sports facilities,
and vibrant spaces where art, creativity, and talents can be nurtured and
celebrated,” he wrote.
- Meanwhile, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar expressed happiness at being
part of this programme and witnessing the beautiful tradition and culture of
the Konyak tribe.
- “He iterated that Nagaland is truly the land of festivals
with celebrations throughout the year and that Konyak, one of the largest and
the most prominent tribes in Nagaland, is blessed with rich culture and
tradition. He emphasised agriculture being an important part of festival
celebration and the backbone of society.
- “Sukanta said the festival is not only about celebrating
tradition but also about recognising the significant contribution it makes to
the nation's cultural diversity along with promoting the rich legacy of the
Konyak,” the DIPR update read.
- W. Chingang Konyak, Advisor for Geology & Mining and
DUDA, presented a report on the Konyak Heritage Complex, while Loungai Wangnao,
the convenor of the Konyak Heritage Complex management board, gave a brief
history and significance of the complex.
- The Angh of Leangha, Yanglem, performed the ceremonial
opening of Konyak Aoleang Monyu. The event featured a ‘banging of bong’ by Dr.
Sukanta Majumdar, ‘beating of logdrum’ by Ukha Paan Nahalan, and firing of
muzzle-loading guns and beating of log drums at all the nine morungs.
- Later, the special guest, the honoured guest, the chief host
and all the invitees inspected the nine morungs, the Angh House and the complex
site.
- There were special performances by cultural troupes from
Pongchao in Arunachal Pradesh, Tai Ahom group from Assam, and from Leangha,
Changnyu, and Wakching villages.
