Kohima, March 23 (EMN): With an aim to promote and preserve the Naga cultural heritage, Kohima Village Youth Organisation (KVYO) has celebrated Sekrenyi festival along with the khel peli (peer groups) at Kohima village ground, Ziekezou, on March 23.
Various cultural competitions and events marked the Sekrenyi festival as the peli groups came in number to celebrate the occasion at the ground. Several Peli groups and individuals from the four khels of Kohima village took part in various competitions.
Exhoring the gathering at the inaugural programme, treasurer of Angami Public Organisation (APO), Vilie-o Rutsa, has stressed on the important role of peli (peer group) in preserving the unique traditional cultural and identity of the Nagas.
He said peer group is an informal platform where the various activities held is a learning ground for the members to get to know each other, gain knowledge and learn the values of life through sharing and discussion.
He said by coming together, the peer group members are given their share of responsibilities and duties, while in return they also contribute to the community.
Rutsa pointed out that peli group, which was practiced and followed religiously in the olden times, is now being substituted by formal classroom in the school where young children are given quality education. Besides, with the advent of Christianity, he said that young generations are taught lessons in the church at present.
Johny G Rengma, non officials board of directors of the National Schedule Tribes Finance and Development Corporation (NSTFDC), New Delhi, under Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India; Rajesh Soudararanjan, Deputy Commissioner, Kohima; and Kekhrie Yhome also attended the function and witnessed the events.
Dzuvingusa Mepfuo, vice president KVYO, delivered the welcome address, while special number was presented by Khrietho peli No.11 (P Khel) and P Khel girls.
