The five-day 62nd Kohima Village Sports Association Meet got underway today at Kohima Local Ground with Khriehu Liezietsu, Parliamentary Secretary, YRS, State Lotteries, MTF and Chairman DPDB Kohima as the chief guest of the inaugural programme. The sports meet is hosted by Kohima Village Youth Organisation.
Exhorting the gathering, Khriehu said various kinds of sports help a person to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which not help a person to stay fit and hearty but also contributes towards maintaining one’s mental health as well. He also said that sports helps a person to be discipline, and though one does not always win, he maintained that it brings in a person the essence of true sportsmanship, which also helps and guides a person throughout his life.
Pointing out that government jobs has reach its saturation point long back, the Parliamentary Secretary said there is ample opportunity in the field of sports for a career as well as earn one’s livelihood for those who have talents. Citing some examples where sports is being promoted in India like the Indian Premier League as in cricket, Indian Super League as in football, kabbadi, wrestling etc, he remarked that in other parts of the world, the day’s earning of a sportsman is equal to 20-30 years salary of other officers. Appreciating KVYO for hosting the meet, Khriehu also stressed on the need to promote traditional customs and traditions through various programmes that can bring all the people together to build up more unity and harmony among its people.
Exhorting the four Khels of Kohima Village, Khriehu remaked that though they are at par with others in all fields like sports and athletes, music, education, business etc, he maintained one need to be more dedicated and sincere in whatever they do and also judiciously use its time to excel much better.
He also advised the youth present to guide and encourage each other towards better understanding, live a good life and set a good example to the coming generation. He also declared open the KVSA 62nd meet and wished the players the best.
Citing a brief history on the formation of Kohima Village Sports Meet which was introduced in the year 1944 to encourage the traditional bond of friendship, harmony and understanding amongst the four khels of Kohima Village i.e. Lhisiemia Khel, Dapfhütsumia Khel, Tsütuonuomia Khel and Pfuchatsumia Khel, Ketounei Kire, President, KVYO in his presidential address informed that the sports meet was hosted alternately by the four khels annually and later biennially.
However, in the year 2014, the responsibility of hosting the sports meet was handed over to Kohima Village Youth Organisation (KVYO) under the banner of KVSA, and he said KVYO will continue to host the KVSA meet biennially.
While welcoming all to the sports meet, the president is optimistic that through this the people of the village will further its unity and harmony among each other in the coming days.
Earlier the inaugural programme was compered by Vilakuolie Mere and Menuosenuo Tseikha, KVSA torch lit by Khrievotuo Sekhose, prayer offered by Pastor Neivizolie Chielie, KBK, welcome address by Medovilhoulie Tseikha, Convenor Organising Committee and the oath taking administered by Petekhriezo Dzüvichü, Chief Marshal.
Today’s events played included 100 metres race (Men and Women), discuss throw (Men and Women), Shot Put (Men and Women), 800 metres (Men), 200 metres race (Men and Women), Javelin (men), 1500 metres race (Men), Broad Jump (Men), 400 metres race (Women) and 4x200 metres race (Men).
