Kohima, Jan. 12 (EMN): Kohima Village Sports Association (KVSA) celebrated its 75th anniversary at Kohima village local ground on Friday. Many awards were given away to sports personalities during the event.
The history of KVSA began in 1944 with the idea of having “friendly wrestling meet,” according to a document made known to the media. Despite the trying times among various khels during those days, the village elders found a way to unite its people through wrestling.
“According to our (Kohima village) customary and traditional practise, the moment two individuals meet in a wrestling bout, a new friendship is established henceforth,” read the statement.
Wrestling bout that was scheduled in the same year (1944) was barred due to the World War II, yet “we can rightfully state that 1944 was the year which laid the foundation of the Kohima village annual sports meet, which in due time evolved into Kohima Village Sports Association,” it added.
The village members attributed wrestling tradition for bringing “an atmosphere of respect, oneness, and mutual harmony” among the people which remains intact to this day.
Several awards, including gratitude citation, meritorious, posthumous, appreciation and recognition were given away to distinguished sports personalities during the anniversary celebration.
