Dimapur, September 17 : Come October 5, if things go as planned, Kohima town will see a peaceful, empty, and hopefully cleaner capital at least even for a day. Vehicles are to remain off the road for the day, for instance, and any business enterprise that uses power-driven machinery will take the day off too.
It is to remind citizens that humanity continues to devour the environment, the world, and by effect, humankind itself, into extinction.
The Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) has called for an event that they termed “a moment of solidarity to enable our environment,” scheduled for the 5th of October. The event, understood to be an environmental conservation campaign, begins from 6 am and till 6 pm in Kohima, the AYO stated in a press release to the media on Saturday.
One said day, traffic and machinery and heavy-power businesses will also cease, the organization stated in its list of symbolic observances that would be undertaken then.
It is “in the conviction of our duty of solidarity for humanity, for the coming generations, and to campaign for an environment that will enhance and be suitable to sustain and support lives...” the organization, based in Kohima, stated. The AYO explained that environment and climate issues “have become too imperative to be ignored or to be left to the next generation to address this implacable fact.”
With the environment at an ‘unprecedented point of vulnerability,’ the organization stated, the damage and the “threat of our own human existence have become too eminent if we don’t react prudently now, accept our responsibility in the current situation, act to repair what can be repaired, and conserve what can be conserved to prepare a future for ourselves and for posterity.”
With said concern in mind, the organization said to have undertaken the initiative “to impress upon the present generation for an attitudinal and behavioural change towards our nature and environment for a world that enable decent and convenient living.”
In exercise of said initiative, on October 5, the AYO will impose a number of symbolic strictures in commemoration. They are (given verbatim):
- All vehicles to remain off the road for the day
- All mills/crushers/print/fabricating houses/workshops/cafes/constructing agents using planners and other power driven equipments etc to down/cease their power driven machinery/activity for the day
- Minimal and judicious usage of power at home on TVs/Fridges/ PCs etc
- All vehicle owners/ drivers etc to cease engines even at home /garages
The scheduled day is not a “bandh”, the organization clarified.
‘Therefore, no restriction on human movement and activities will be imposed under any manner. “A moment of solidarity to enable our environment” is a call to all to take a walk to work, work with human driven energy, feel a day with nature - a day without dependence on fossil fuel energy related to life, to take a walk for healthy and better life, a day to enable our environment to recoup its vitality for human sustenance,” the AYO stated in the message.
