DIMAPUR — In a landmark announcement made on December 26 at Touphema village, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Oscar and Grammy-winning musician Dr. AR Rahman unveiled plans for the Naga International Studio, a world-class music production and creative facility in Kohima.
Conceptualised by Rahman, the studio will feature state-of-the-art recording studios, a performance auditorium, and supporting infrastructure, serving as a Centre of Excellence for music production, training, mentorship, and capacity building under the guidance of the legendary composer.
The project aims to put Nagaland and India prominently on the global music map, attracting national and international artists, boosting cultural tourism, and strengthening the creative economy.
The studio, designed by Bluecube Architects and Riyasdeen Riyan, Rahman’s son-in-law, is facilitated by Task Force for Music & Arts (TaFMA) and Investment & Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN), with funding proposed through private corporate investment.
Rio welcomed Rahman to his native village, presenting traditional gifts, and lauded the musician’s commitment to Nagaland.

He expressed hope that the studio would promote Nagaland’s rich musical heritage, enable world-class collaborations, and provide a platform for the region’s talented youth to contribute to the creative arts on a global scale.
Since his first visit to Nagaland in 2019 as the chief guest of Hornbill Festival, Rahman has actively engaged with the state, mentoring local musicians and fostering a vibrant music ecosystem.
TaFMA acknowledged Rio’s consistent vision and support in advancing Nagaland’s music and arts sector.
