Dimapur, Sep. 10 (EMN):Deputy Commission, Kohima, Gregory Thejawelie, has stressed on the need for holding talks on sanitation and hygiene and harmful effects of using any form of plastics in the school assembly at least once a week. He added that in line with the decision of the state government to ban use of all forms of single-used plastic, Kohima district would be enforcing the ban from October 1, 2019.
Thejawelie stated this at the inaugural function of a newly constructed building of Government Middle School (GMS) at Lower Chandmari, Kohima, on September 10. The DC is also the Chairman of District Mission Authority (DMA), Samagra Shiksha Kohima.
Stating that use of plastic has become a serious health and environmental hazard, Thejawelie stressed on the importance of creating awareness not only among the general populace but also to spread the message to young students on the harmful effects of single-used plastics by holding discussions in the school assemblies. He added that talks on the importance of sanitation and hygiene should also be taken up on such platforms.
While highlighting the problems of proxy teaching and irregularity of teachers in many government schools, the DC urged the government teachers to know their responsibility and focus on providing quality education. He also said that in order to improve the quality education in government schools, the department has been facilitating teachers to undergo various trainings for skill development through various schemes.
Also pointing that the government has been providing good school buildings, he said the task now is to increase enrolment in government schools by providing quality education.
The DC appreciated the School Management Committee (SMC) of GMS Lower Chandmari saying that many SMCs do not work for the welfare of the schools. He remarked that the efforts of SMC GMS Lower Chandmari should be a model for others.
Assistant District Coordinator of DMA Samagra Shiksha, Thongsenlo lauded the SMC of the school for managing to construct a double storeyed building with kitchen and other facilities whereas the actual sanction was for Assam type five rooms.
He called upon the public to preserve and protect the school property as their own and also help in making it a centre of learning. Thongsenlo also urged the teachers to be more sincere and dedicated saying that teachers are not just government employees but on a mission to impart quality education.
Secretary of SMC Lower Chandmari, John Kath, in his brief report on the new building, disclosed that it was constructed with an amount of INR 30 lakh with the fund provided under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan by DMA Kohima.
The SMC Lower Chandmari also submitted representation to the DC and Chairman DMA Samagra Shiksha Kohima with point charter of appeal which include upgradation from GMS to Government High School, construction of school fencing, providing water filter facility, appointment of Grade-IV staff and construction of footsteps from the road down to the school.
Chairman of Lower Chandmari panchayat, Nohokhul Sophie, and GB Lower Chandmari, Hoshito Assumi, also exhorted the gathering.
