Science College (KSC), Jotsoma, marked World Wetlands Day with the official
launch of its green initiative campaign, focusing on promoting sustainability
and environmental responsibility through a special programme held at the
college premises on February 1.
- An update from the college stated that the event emphasised
the importance of waste management and wetland conservation in ensuring a
healthier and more sustainable environment.
- The programme, organised in collaboration with the Nature's
Club, was chaired by Tewe Medo, coordinator of the Nature's Club, which began
with an inspiring speech delivered by Shevito Theyo, assistant professor and
green initiative leader.
- Theyo highlighted the purpose of the "Zero waste
Wednesday" campaign, stressing the college’s commitment to reducing waste
and fostering eco-conscious practices.
- "The initiative aims to encourage the entire campus to
be more mindful of the waste we generate, focusing on sustainable waste
management practices," Theyo said adding "Launching this campaign on
World Wetlands Day symbolises the important connection between responsible
waste management and the protection of our vital wetland ecosystems."
- He urged both students and faculty to actively participate
in the movement to reduce waste, be more mindful of their environmental impact
and inspire others to adopt similar sustainable practices.
- "Our college campus should be known for its
eco-conscious efforts, where sustainability is not just a buzzword, but a way
of life," Theyo emphasised.
- Delivering the keynote address, Kousal Kumar Pandit,
secretary of the Nature's Club, highlighted the significance of World Wetlands
Day. He explained that wetlands play a crucial role in environmental
protection, particularly as natural filters that purify water and help in
mitigating the effects of floods and climate change.
