Dimapur, Sep. 17: National Mathematics Day, sponsored by Nagaland Science and Technology Council (NASTEC) under National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), was observed at Kohima Science College, Jotsoma (KSCJ) on September 15.
The National Mathematics Day 2018 was organised by the Department of Mathematics, with eight institutions from Kohima participating in the inter-school competitions, according to a statement from the college.
National Mathematics Day is observed on the birth anniversary of famed mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan on Dec. 22 after the date was declared as the ‘National Mathematics Day’ by former Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh in 2012.
However the KSCJ observed the day on Sep. 15 commemorating the college’s foundation day and also keeping in consideration that December was vacation period for schools and colleges in Nagaland, said head of the department (HOD) of Mathematics, Dr. SN Pandey to Eastern Mirror.
This was the first time the college organised ‘ National Mathematics Day’ with the aim to encourage students to take keen interest in the subject.
“The statement that youngsters are weak in mathematics is not correct and which need to be removed; and to make this assumption invalid, such event should be conducted to make the subject motivating and it is the responsibility of every individual to put in effort for the challenges”, asserted Pandey.
The participating schools were CD King Higher Secondary School, Baptist High, Mezhür HSS, Model HSS, Rüzhükhrie GHSS, Modern College, Little Flower HSS, and Mount Sinai HSS.
The event was inaugurated by vice principal of KSCJ, Tokheni Sema.
Competitions were held in three categories: quiz competition, project competition and mathematics teaching competition.
