  • KOHIMA — Pedestrians accounted for more than 50% of fatalities in road accidents in Kohima district in 2024.

  • As per Kohima Police data made available to Eastern Mirror, a total of 72 road accidents and 17 related deaths were reported in the district in 2024.

  • Of the 17 deaths, 9 were pedestrians, with the highest number of pedestrian fatalities recorded in April (five deaths) and one each in February, October, November, and December.

  • Additional Superintendent of Police, Kohima and PRO, K Soriso Quinker, told this newspaper that most of the accident cases take place due to drunken and rash driving, a common occurrence in all the districts.

  • In the past years too, the majority of the road accidents in Kohima were due to drunken driving, he said.

  • “Rash driving mainly occurs on the highways. In towns, especially during nighttime, drivers drive under the influence of alcohol, causing road accidents,” he noted.

  • Sometimes, road accidents occur due to commuter and pedestrian negligence and not following the traffic rules.

  • However, compared to other districts, the public in Kohima is more informed and disciplined when it comes to traffic rules, he added.

  • The PRO went on to inform that accidents due to mechanical failures are very rare these days.

  • During the National Road Safety Month 2025 from January 1 to the 30th, Kohima Police undertook various initiatives on road safety awareness, including conducting awareness programmes in government offices, educational institutions, and among the drivers. IEC materials were also distributed to the commuters.

  • Kohima Police also plan to procure more road dividers and cones (reflectors) for better safety of the public.
