Kohima residents walk for peace

Kohima, Oct. 2 (EMN):
Marking a year-long celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the culmination of 'Fit India Movement,'  the department of Youth Resources and Sport (YRS) in collaboration with Home department and supported by the National Service Scheme (NSS) organised an event in Kohima under ‘Walk for Peace’ on October 2.

During a brief programme held at PHQ junction, Kohima, YRS director Akumla Chuba has described Gandhi as a social reformer and founder of the independence movement.

She said it was Gandhi who laid the principle of non-violence movement and truth that left an impact on freedom struggle against the British and eventually made an impact across the globe that paved the way for civil rights movement and fight against discrimination.

She added that throughout his life, Gandhi worked for the uplift of the poor in India and had a vision for a self-reliant India.

The director stated that October 2 is also celebrated as the 'International Day of Non-Violence' in remembrance of the contributions made by Gandhi. She urged the participants to emulate the deeds and principles of non-violence to usher in harmony and peace in the community.

Later, the director flagged off the peace rally wherein participants marched from PHQ Junction till Kohima local ground.

The participants of the rally included officials from the Home and Youth Resources and Sports departments and NSS Volunteers.
