Kohima, Aug. 31 (EMN): The incessant monsoon rains have affected lives of the people in various ways due to landslides in various locations, causing untold problems even in the simple functioning of everyday works. The result, huge piles of garbage and overflowing dustbins were seen along the stretch of the capital road and in various colonies, as they were left unattended – an ugly sight and a source of stench for passers-by.
Unable to bear the stench and the ugly sight, the members of Jail colony panchayat in Kohima and the youth have organised and taken up the onus of burning and clearing the garbage, piled up in the locality after weeks of being left unattended.
The garbage, supposed to be collected by the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), has been left unattended causing stench in the surrounding areas and posing threat to both health and environment of the locality. With no alternative measure, a member of the colony said, the panchayat has organised a social work to burn and clear the garbage.
The administrator of Kohima Municipal Council, Kovi Meyase told
Eastern Mirror that the garbage could not be collected as the roads leading to both the dumping sites at Lerie and Dzuruzou have been cut off due to the landslides, and vehicles left stranded.
He however, said that repairing of roads has started and assured that collection of garbage in the town will resume by September 1. It will take an alternative route via IG Stadium for the same.
Meanwhile, the KMC in a notification informed members of the public that due to incessant rain, the roads leading to Lerie and Dzuruzou KMC garbage dumping site have been completely cut off at various locations.
It further stated that the KMC and the district administration along with ward/colony authorities were putting all efforts towards restoring the road at the earliest. Towards this end, it has appealed to all the citizens, business establishments and shopkeepers to cooperate in managing their waste at household level and not to throw or accumulate in any collection points at ward and commercial areas until the road is restored.
