Dimapur, May 30 (EMN): Office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Kohima, has launched the Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight (IDCF) at Government Middle School, Merhulietsa, on May 28 by SPO (RCH) Dr. Atoshe Sema.
Speaking at the launching programme, SPO (RCH) Dr. Atoshe Sema, stated that childhood diarrhoeal diseases continues to be a major killer among children below five years in many states contributing 10.4% in the country. According to him around 1.4 lakhs children die due to diarrhoea annually in the country.
He also mentioned that deaths due to diarrhoea could be averted by treating dehydration with ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) and administration of Zinc tablets along with adequate nutritional intake.
DPO (RCH-UIP) also added that the Government of India aims to achieve ‘zero childhood diarrhoea deaths’ by 2020.
He further stressed on hand-washing demonstration in all primary and middle schools.
Peren district has also launched the Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight (IDCF) on May 28.

Prior to launching of IDCF, sensitisation and orientation on IDCF for health workers was carried out on May 7 by Dr. Nukshisangla, DPO, RCH/UIP,
where she highlighted about the goals and the focus of IDCF and the activities that needs to be carried out at the community, village and the health facility levels.
She had also briefed on the importance of how to prepare homemade ORS, demonstrated on hand-washing and appealed all the members and field workers to give their full support and cooperation in carrying out the task.
Altogether, 141 ASHAs are involved in the programme. A total of 7000 ORS sachet were distributed to all the health units. IEC materials on anti-diarrhoeal posters and leaflets were also distributed.
