Dimapur, November 15: Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) observed the National Legal Services Day cum prize distribution of essay writing competition on the topic “Fundamental rights/ duties and the role of a law abiding citizen” in the DC’s conference hall, Kohima, on November 9.
The welcome address was delivered by V Ashu Theyo, Retainer Lawyer of Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench. He expressed gratitude to all the students/ teachers and the faculty members from different colleges/ institutions for their participation the National Legal Services Day along with the rest of the country.
Sunjib Rana, Panel Lawyer (KDLSA), who spoke on the topic “Importance of Legal Services Authority,” said the movement was first started in France in the year 1851. The sole purpose of the service/movement, according to him, was mainly for prisoners of war who were not able to communicate with their family/relatives and their love ones, who were from far flung or from other countries in the prison.
He said the main purpose of the legal service was to reach to every citizen whether in the rural or even to the remotest area. It also creates awareness/ legal literacy programmes for the under privileged and the weaker sections of the society.
Short speech was delivered by Rovilato Mor, Deputy Commissioner and Ex Officio member KDLSA. He said law is important in everyday life and also for the welfare of every citizen.
Underlining the purpose of having legal service to create maximum awareness programme in the context of social and economic for the citizens, he said free legal aid was to ensure that justice is not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disabilities.
In the essay writing competition, Phyopenthung of Capital College won the first position, while Ms Krecheni Krechena of Model Christian College and Ms Athungbeni W Shitiri of Model Christian College were declared second and third winners respectively. Adidong Longkumer of Sazolie College, Ms Wonchano of Model Christian College were adjusted the fourth and fifth winners respectively.
The programme was chaired by Temsu Walling, Panel Lawyer (KDLSA). 1st Class Judicial Magistrate Smti. Tucuno Vamuzo, Panel Lawyers, also attended the programme.
