Dimapur, Sep. 12 (EMN): A meeting of the Kohima district-level monitoring committee for implementation of the Nagaland Integrated Waste Management Policy 2019 was conducted on September 11 in the office chamber of the deputy commissioner of Kohima.
The government publicity agency the department of Information and Public Relations (IPR) issued a report to the media on Wednesday informing about the meeting.
Deputy Commissioner Gregory Thejawelie said at the meeting that the committee was constituted to evaluate and monitor implementation of waste management practices in the district. He urged the members of the group to take the venture seriously and to create awareness for successful implementation of the policy in the district.
The public servant highlighted Rule 22 of the Solid Waste Management Rules of 2016 where the timeframe for implementation by local bodies and other authorities in concern in Nagaland is to be followed.
The meeting had lengthy discussions on various issues concerning waste management, the IPR stated. Members of the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), local environmental group Green Team Kohima, and community organisation Rengma Hoho and others gave their views and made suggestions basing on their experiences, to be incorporated in the action plan for implementation of the policy in the district.
The meeting decided to identify places for collection of re-useable waste from the 19 wards of the area, starting with PWD and New Market colonies as a pilot project and to conduct programmes to educate the people in the rural areas.
Members from the KMC, and district forest establishments highlighted activities that they undertook in regard to segregation of waste and waste management, the updates stated.
The Green Team of Kohima also highlighted various programmes that were organised in regard to segregation of waste, waste management and waste reduction in different wards, colleges and schools, the IPR stated.
