Kohima accounts for 17.54% of Nagaland’s estimated unincorporated establishments, according to new district-level NSO data released September 10.
DIMAPUR — Kohima accounts for 17.54% of Nagaland’s estimated unincorporated non-agricultural establishments, the highest share among districts in the state, according to the first-ever district-level estimates released by the National Statistical Office (NSO).
The figures are part of the Unincorporated Sector at the District Level: Insights from ASUSE 2025, released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on September 10. The report provides district-level estimates on the scale and structure of the unincorporated sector, including establishments, employment, ownership, women's participation and economic performance.
Kohima's 17.54% share represents its contribution to the total estimated unincorporated establishments in Nagaland. The release does not provide the absolute number of establishments in the district or the state.
The unincorporated non-agricultural sector covered by the survey comprises establishments engaged in manufacturing, trade and other services. It includes proprietorships, partnerships excluding Limited Liability Partnerships, cooperatives, societies and trusts, among others.
Across the Northeast, the district-level data show considerable variation in the concentration of such establishments. Imphal West accounts for 24.75% of Manipur's estimated establishments, East Khasi Hills 26.85% of Meghalaya's, Aizawl 31.49% of Mizoram's, Gangtok 27.97% of Sikkim's and West Tripura 32.66% of Tripura's. In Arunachal Pradesh, Papum Pare accounts for 24.57%, while Dhubri accounts for 8.14% of Assam's estimated establishments.

The report also highlights the significant role of women in the unincorporated sector in the Northeast. The top 10 districts nationally with the highest share of female-led unincorporated establishments are located in Telangana, Manipur and Meghalaya. In Mizoram, female-owned proprietary establishments account for at least 50% of establishments in every district of the state.
Similarly, in workforce participation, the top 10 districts with the highest share of female workers are located in Telangana, Manipur, Meghalaya and Mizoram. Nationally, women constitute at least one-third of the workforce in the unincorporated sector in 237 districts, while they account for more than half of the workforce in 25 districts.
The NSO said the district-level estimates mark its first initiative to disseminate district-level findings from a large-scale nationwide survey. The exercise is aimed at strengthening granular, sub-state-level statistics and enabling more targeted policy interventions by identifying regional variations, emerging strengths and areas requiring attention.
At the national level, the report found that the unincorporated sector is concentrated in a relatively small number of districts. The top 10 districts account for about one-tenth of the sector’s establishments, workforce and Gross Value Added (GVA), while the top 50 account for nearly one-third. GVA per worker exceeds the all-India average of INR 1,56,539 in 280 districts.
The district-level estimates cover 757 of the 770 districts available in the ASUSE 2025 sampling frame. The NSO cautioned that the figures should be interpreted in light of differences in economic and demographic characteristics, industrial composition, local conditions and sampling variability, as they are based on sample survey data.
