Dimapur, Oct. 4 (EMN): With the objective to improve their skills as professional lawyers, the Kohima Law College conducted a moot court in its college premises on Oct. 2 where 25 students participated as counsels/advocates and the professor-in-charge of the college, Kezhokhoto Savi acted as the judge.
Moot court is a mock court at which law students argue imaginary cases for practice. It is an extracurricular activity at many law schools in which participants take part in simulated court or arbitration proceedings, usually involving drafting memorials or memoranda and participating in oral argument.
The students/mooters argued on three cases i.e. moot court problems consisting of a national level competition problem, another on regional level, and the third one about a criminal case of murder with death penalty based on rarest of rare case.
The Professor-in-charge of KLC, Kezhokhoto Savi said that the purpose of organising and conducting Moot Court is to help the law students to become a successful lawyer in future as students may learn the knowledge and practice the legal language, the art of presenting their case, their appearance and behaviour in the court, and also apply their instincts through the simulated court cases.
“A lawyer requires three essential pillars i.e. integrity, hard working and honesty to be successful and trusted counsel in modern society,” said Savi. While underscoring the importance of moot court, Savi said that such activity gives confidence to the students to conduct cases in future when they are called upon to do so in their professional life.
“Students are asked to argue on points of law They are require to develop their argumental skill and art of preparation and presentation of legal documents. Moot Court will pay a meaningful role in their future life,” said the prof. -in-charge of the Kohima Law College.
