Kohima, Nov. 29 (EMN): With less than a day before the much-awaited Hornbill Festival begins, Kohima district is all geared-up to host the 10-daylong event from December 1 to the 10th.
In view of the annual state festival, Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), district administration, Kohima Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), and department concerned, have issued several directives to the citizens.
The Kohima district administration had conducted eviction drive on November 26 and the 27th and the KMC has directed the shopkeepers along the National Highway 29, including Kohima town, to paint their shutters, display signboards and ensure good lighting. A mass cleanliness drive was also conducted within the Kohima Municipal area on November 23 under the supervision of district administration along with KMC, KCCI and others.
Kohima deputy commissioner Gregory Thejawelie has appreciated Kohima denizens for cooperating with the administration. “It is good that we are getting positive response from the public; that is one thing we have noticed. People are paying heed to our request and directives,” he told
Eastern Mirror over the phone.
“Apart from our normal duty, we are trying to ensure cleanliness of the town,” he added.
The administration has also streamlined cable wires and hanging pipelines that have been haphazardly tied to the poles along NH-29, clearing them before the “festival of festivals” commences. “Within this limited time, we are trying to ensure that our town is more presentable,” the DC said.
While doing this, Thejawelie said, the administration has made some provisions to ensure that public do not suffer, making alternative arrangement including laying of iron pipes.
The district administration along with KMC and Smart City Kohima is trying to come up with “an iron structure” along CM residents to PR Hill Junction wherein pipelines can be laid without being exposed, he added.
During the eviction drive along the main road, several machineries and manpower were employed to clear all the building materials and other structures that obstruct flow of traffic and footpaths. This, he said, was to ensure free movement of vehicles and pedestrians as well as to maintain safety.
These works were taken up after having a series of meeting with the departments concerned, wards chairman, and public, Thejawelie informed. To execute the work, several committees were set up to look after the management of cable wires, water pipelines connection and so on. On visiting the spots, committees prepared a report based on the feedback of all the wards and public. After taking people’s feedback into consideration, they came up with an action plan and was implemented accordingly, he added.
“Not that we will be able to change things overnight but some improvement is taking place,” he said, ensuring that they will continue to carry out such exercise from time to time. He went on to say that the district administration is working hand-in-hand with the KMC in coming up the strategies.
With regard to security measures, he said the administration has tied up with the state police and other agencies to ensure the safety of the people.
