KOHIMA — A fire that broke out at a residential house in Daklane Colony below United Traders here on Monday afternoon was brought under control before it could spread to nearby buildings, though property worth an estimated INR 2.5 lakh was damaged.
Officials from the South Fire Station, Kohima, said they received the fire call at around 1:26 pm. Two fire tenders from the South Fire Station and one from the North Fire Station, along with fire personnel, were immediately dispatched to the spot.
Before the arrival of the fire tenders, residents from the surrounding area managed to douse the flames, preventing the fire from spreading further.
Officials said the situation could otherwise have posed a serious risk to nearby shops and stores located in a busy part of the state capital.
On reaching the site, the incident commander and fire personnel conducted an inspection before returning.
According to preliminary reports, the fire occurred in a residential unit occupied by a couple of non-locals in a four-storey building. Officials said the fire may have been caused by a burning agarbatti or candle, as it did not originate from the area where electrical wiring was present, although the fire later affected the wiring.
Items destroyed in the incident included a bed, clothing, household articles and jewellery. The total loss has been estimated at around INR 2.5 lakh, officials said.
Meanwhile, an officer from the South Fire Station highlighted parking congestion near the station, due to its proximity to KP Bethesda Hospital, as a recurring challenge that often causes delays for fire tenders responding to emergencies. The issue has been taken up with the district administration and higher authorities, but remains unresolved, the officer said, calling for urgent measures to ensure quicker response during emergencies.
