Kohima, Nov. 25 (EMN): The 5th Open Kohima District Volleyball Championship commenced on Saturday at the Kohima local ground under the theme “transcending through sports.”
23 teams, including 15 men’s and eight women’s teams, are taking part in the four-day tournament being organised by the Kohima District Volleyball Association (KDVA).
The inaugural function was graced by Neise Mechülho, Retd. Director, Government of Nagaland, as the chief guest.
In his address, Mechülho encouraged the need to take part in games and sports activities as it has become an essential part of our lives.
“The importance of games and sports is embracing us more and more, and we can in no way undermine it. We must take the challenge to harness its numerous benefits,” he urged.
Mechülho also lauded the KDVA for conducting the annual volleyball tournament, while he suggested the need to conduct more volleyball tournaments separately for schools, colleges and wards/colonies, for which he said financial needs may be pursued with the department concerned.
“Out of the numerous games being played at our level, volleyball is a game which is not only popular, but is one of the most familiar games known to all of us. Volleyball is second to no other game,” he remarked. The programme commenced with invocation pronounced by Rev Fr Peter Salew, parish priest, Christ King Church, Kohima village, while the welcome address was delivered by KDVA president, Visasielie Suohu.
A special number was presented by Vilakhonuo Keditsu, while the organising committee convenor Thepfuhulie Belho administered oath to the players.
