Kohima, Oct. 29 (EMN): The 9th edition of Kohima District Table Tennis Championship commenced in the TT Indoor Stadium, Kohima on Tuesday, October 29.
The three-day tournament organised by the Kohima District Table Tennis Association (KDTTA) will conclude on October 31.
A total of 56 players -- six players for women single category, three players for sub-junior (girls) category, 18 players for veteran category, eight players for Youth Single category and 21 players for men category – will compete in the championship. The total prize money is INR 40,000.
Mayang Longkumer (60 years) is the oldest weteran player, while Vichaduonuo Rame (11 years) is the youngest player participating in the tournament.
Kevithuto Sophie, senior superintendent of police, Kohima expressed happiness over the good participation on the inaugural day and maintained that unlike other games, table tennis does not need ‘hefty physics but a combination of techniques, practice and dedication.’
He urged the people not only to keep themselves active in sports apart from competition but also to have healthy body and stay fit. “It all depends on our determination and our will power to whatever sports we do,” he said.
Director of the tournament Lhoulievi Belho informed that the tournament will be played on league basis and the winners will be selected to participate in the inter-district championship.
