KOHIMA, JUNE 24
THE Kohima district administration has initiated a drainage clearance drive on June 22 with a view to maintain better roads in the state capital. Three days into the works on Tuesday, it was learnt that the effort of the district administration is purely a community service.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kohima, W Honje Konyak who is personally overseeing the works, informed that there is no programme nor funds from the government’s side for the work that is being undertaken. “It is a community service that we are doing,” he said, adding, with contributions from different quarters and individuals. He indicated that unless the people who are concerned take up the initiative, no one is going to step in to do it. The DC said that after the major clearance is done, the BRO will step in to concretize the drains. He also informed that various departments and organizations are contributing to the works including the PHED and BSNL, the Angami Public Organization and Kohima Municipal Council.
SDO (Sadar) Kohima, Wennyei Konyak, who was also present at the work site near Classic Island late Tuesday evening said that once the clearance work at the current location is completed, other areas along the highway in the town that require similar work will be taken into consideration.
The district administration is of the view that good and concrete drains are badly needed to maintain the roads in Kohima, which have so far remained deplorable even after repairs year after year. The ongoing drainage clearance has also made a widening of the road possible by several feet.
Meanwhile, the district administration has appealed to the general public for cooperation so that better drainages can be maintained and good roads will become a reality in the state capital.
