Kohima Diocese launches a tree plantation drive at NEISSR Chümoukedima, promoting environmental stewardship inspired by Pope Francis' encyclical “Laudato si”.

DIMAPUR — In a symbolic gesture of environmental responsibility, the Commission for “Care for God’s Creation” under the Kohima Diocese launched a tree plantation initiative at the North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Chümoukedima.
According to an update, the commission is spearheaded by Nosazol Charles and Dr. Chacko Karinthayil, and the initiative is an outcome of Pope Francis' encyclical, “Laudato si”, which emphasises the care for God’s creation and calls for a global response to protect Earth.

The event highlighted the urgent need to protect and preserve the environment, encouraging the adoption of eco-friendly habits and the reduction of plastic use.
Sharing practical implementation, Nosazol recalled the 5th Regional Youth Convention 2025 held at Kohima, where participants embraced a plastic-free zone by using plant leaves to serve food and avoiding plastic bottles.
He warned that continued irresponsible human actions are causing severe damage to the environment. He further urged everyone to take positive action to preserve and promote love for God’s creation.
Dr. Chacko Karinthayil shared the spiritual and ecological significance of the initiative. NEISSR students and Peace Channel members attended the programme and planted trees as part of the event.
