Central Market, a 62-room market complex was inaugurated here today at Serü, located alongside the ‘Box-Cutting Road’, by Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) CEO, Lithrongla Tongpi.
The market is a venture of the Neirülhou Sekhose clan of T-Khel, Kohima village, to cater essential commodities like meat, vegetables, clothing, crockery and other daily needs to the people.
In her inaugural address, the municipal official highlighted the importance of segregation of waste and urged the traders and the proprietors of the market to maintain separation of their garbage such as papers and plastics from vegetables/meat waste. She informed that disposal of wastes should be made after 6 p.m. and before 5 a.m. for the municipal waste pick-up vehicles to collect them from designated collection points.While acknowledging that the market is located at a strategic point in the town, connecting three colonies- New Market, Raj Bhavan and TCP Gate (Midland), Tongpi expressed concern that it also lies on an accident prone area. Towards this, she asked the proprietors to keep precautions for parking of shoppers’ vehicles on the roadside.
She also underscored the need to encourage vegetables and meat traders to avail digital weighing machines which are approved by the legal metrology department and the KMC so as to serve accurate quantity of products to consumers. She further called for cooperation between the traders, proprietors and the municipal body for the welfare of all including the public of the state capital.
Dr. Ahu Sekhose, who chaired the function, stressed that the shopkeepers and shop owners have the responsibility to keep the market area clean. He urged upon them for good sanitation practices and judicious usage of electricity.
He also acknowledged the organizations and individuals who supported and contributed towards the putting up of the market complex, making a special mention of Atu Sekhose and Neikuo Sekhose for their efforts.
Earlier, Khedi Baptist Church pastor, Neivizolie Chielie pronounced the invocation and dedicatory prayer.
