KOHIMA, OCTOBER 15: Though Nagaland is considered to be the highest consumers of meat, it still falls short on meat production to meet the requirement of the consumers and considering that crores of rupees is being spent every year by the Nagas for import of meat from outside the state, Administrator of Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), Kovi Meyase called upon the members of butchers’ union Kohima to strive for self sufficiency of meat in the State so as to contain flow of capital from going outside the state for economic upliftment of the people.
Speaking as the chief guest at the annual day celebration of Butchers’ Union Kohima Town (BUKT) at District Hospital Phriebazhü, P Khel, Kohima village, on October 15, Meyase said butchers play crucial role and have a far reaching impact in the society by serving the homes of the poorest to the richest.
While pointing out that more than 200 diseases can be transmitted from animals to humans thereby putting the health of both the butchers and consumers at risk, he said responsibilities of the people involved in this business is immense. Stating that their role and responsibility contributes directly to the health of the society, he recommended for locally bred animals and most of all clean, healthy and quality meat to the consumers. The butchers were also urged to maintain clean and hygienic conditions in and around their abattoir for their safety and the consumers. In this regard, he said KMC is willing to facilitate a health camp for the members of the union.
Meyase, while reminding them on the use of digital weighing machines and maintenance of rates as fixed by KMC, requested them against setting up of abattoir by the main roads and to stop open selling of meat by the roadside and footpaths, which are not only unhygienic but an eyesore.
With the proposed Smart City Plan, Meyase asked them to upgrade themselves and their services and also gear themselves to meet the changing times with or without smart city.
Meanwhile, BUKT secretary, Kholie Keyho, in a short speech, lamented on the illegal practices of some butchers particularly in measurement. He appealed the members not to give into self-interest motivated practices but rather imbibe the value of fairness and honesty in their businesses.
The programme was chaired by BUKT president, Neiziengulie Rame. The gathering was enthralled with a special number presented by Vimethanuo and Nounenuo.
