As a part of the measures the district administration is mulling to tackle the menace, an ‘engineer wing’ of the Traffic establishment has been entrusted to undertake research and come up with a consolidated proposal to counter the ‘traffic problem’. The members of the planning and development agency met for the month of August in the board’s conference hall on August 17. Vice chairman of the board, Rovilatuo Mor, presided over the meeting.Taking up issues concerning the traffic congestion in Kohima town, Rovilatuo Mor, also deputy commissioner of Kohima district, informed the board that a ‘traffic committee’ was constituted by the board and a series of verifications and inspections have been conducted. He said that the ‘engineer wing’ of the Traffic establishment has been entrusted to undertake research and come up with a consolidated proposal to counter the traffic problem. Executive engineer (Public Works department) Imnameren highlighted the current situation concerning the traffic problem in Kohima town. He referred to a ‘survey’ and observation of two months, and a proposal for major reforms to tackle the traffic congestion. The development board discussed the proposal and approved it to be ‘forwarded to the higher authority for further necessary action’. Also, the recent collapse of a road leading to the Secretariat in Kohima town, the deputy commissioner informed that the PWD department, district administration and village leaders of L Khel of Kohima village have been engaged to open up a temporary road upstream connecting to the Secretariat road. This is the alternative arrangement, the board was told. The members of the board have also decided to approve a proposal for two other available alternative routes to the Secretariat. However, there are some some improvement works to be done on two routes namely from R. Rio School and Women Polytechnic/North Field School road leading to the Secretariat’s route. In other matters, the board reviewed the proceedings of the previous meeting, Mor asked the village adoption committees to meet the dateline given for submission of their final reports i.e. September 15. He expressed hope that the committees would complete the scheduled work in time ‘so that it could be taken up in the next DPDB meeting’. The Administrator of the Kohima Municipal Council, Kovi Meyase, gave a power-point presentation about various departmental activities. He highlighted a number of ‘issues of concern’ and requested the development board to extend help in taking up the issues that concern with ‘national schemes’. The board can help in taking matters associated with them with the government for the benefit of the public, he said. Meyase also appealed to the board to apportion an annual grant to all the wards for operations and maintenance of sanitation vehicles. The vehicles have become old and maintenances continue to be a major cause of concern for all the wards, he said.
