Kohima, Dec. 18 (EMN): The new vigilance team of Officer's Hill Youth Organisation (OHYO) inducted and their uniform launched in Kohima on Friday by Khrielakuo Sekhose, chairman of Officer's Hill Colony Council (OHCC).

During the launch programme held at 5 Point Junction in Officer's Hill (Teghabaka), Sekhose said the youths have always been playing a vital role in Naga society by providing security to the community. He expressed hope that the new team will provide safety and security to the colony.

While the introduction of community policing team was recommended by the South Police station under the guidance of the colony panchayat to assist the force in providing efficient service to the community, it should be noted that the youth should not take law and order into their own hands, Sekhose explained.

He asked that the vigilance team not to resort to violent means but to resolve issues through peacefully and co-ordinate with the police force while executing their services for the community.

Kezhalezo Solo, president of the youth organisation, said that the vigilance team is an "independent body" under OHYO, adding that it comprises of a convenor and secretary. He also implored the members to work as a team and be professional in the noble task they will be performing for the benefit of all.

He stated that the function of the team is to assist OHYO in providing "security" to the residents of the colony in particular and the public in general. "All judicial cases will be jointly taken up by OHYO and vigilance team," Solo said, adding that the team will function purely within the official demarcated boundary of the Officer's Hill colony.

The information and publicity secretary of OHYO, Chomithung Ngullie, informed Eastern Mirror that the 20-member vigilance team will be monitoring strategic locations like Raj Bhavan, State Indoor Stadium, 2nd World War Tank Park, box-cutting etc. within the colony's jurisdiction to curb anti-social activities.

The vigilance team will be led by convenor Kezhachulie Ngusanyü and Kelengol Thore as member secretary for the tenure 2020-2023.
