Dimapur, July 25 (EMN): The Kohima Law College conducted a seminar on the topic “Know your right and entitlement awareness campaign at the college auditorium of Model Christian College on July 25 2018.
A press release received here today at Eastern Mirror, stated that the Kohima Law College led by its professor-in-charge, Kezhokhoto Savi conducted the campaign at the college.
It stated that the college, had on July 13 2018, launched ‘Know your right & entitlement awareness campaign’ to be conducted in colleges and amongst the society to spread education and enlighten the students and citizens of their rights and entitlements.
The Professor-in-charge Kezhokhoto Savi, who is also the president of the Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO), while informing about the seminar, sincerely appealed to the citizens to extent their cooperation and support to the ‘Food safety staff’ in their venture of checking the food which are harmful to human body.
Elaborating on the meaning of ‘food safety’, the well-known advocate said that it refers to the condition and practices that preserve the quality of food to prevent contamination of food borne illness.
“We have Analysis Wing where the State Public Health Laboratory set up food testing laboratory under a Public Analyst located at Merhulietsa (Paramedical) colony, Kohima.
We have Enforcement Wing where the District Food Safety Inspector are posted in every district under Food Safety Officer,”
“At the moment we are aware that various Food Safety Officer in the district especially Dimapur are issuing directions to all the food handles and dealers including all manufacturing and processing units such restaurants, bakeries, hotels, food stalls, package drinking water, water plant, ice cream factories and other edible items shops to improve the hygiene of their facilities/units,” the release stated.
In this connection, the NVCO president pointed out that “sale of food items without FSSAI Certification and use of prohibited chemicals in fruits and vegetables is to be punish/penalised as per the Food Safety & Standard Act 2006.”
The release stated that under the Food Safety & Standard Act 2006, Food means any substance whether processed, partially processed or unprocessed and it includes packaged drinking water, vegetables, infant food products, meat, even the water used for food during its manufacture.
He also pointed out the recent news in the local dailies where the Food Safety officials and staff during surprise checking detected fishes injected with formalin, carbide in fresh fruits, several restaurants and Popular Bakery were found to be unhygienic including Popular Bakery and Plaza Restaurant, Dimapur, Popular Bakery and Paradise Restaurant located P.R. Hill, N.H-29, Kohima, etc.
The release stated that the Food Safety & Standard Authority of India(FSSAI) is to lay down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, to ensure availability of sale and wholesale food for human consumption in the country.
Earlier the Principal of Model Christian College warmly received the resource persons and the program was led by Tsujen Easter of B.Sc 5th semester. Special number entitled – ‘Listen to our heart’ was presented by the college students, the release stated.
The resource persons were L. Lawrence Beio, Toino Awomi, B. Yemlong Chang, Aphrenuo Sorhie, Benison V. Shohe and Amhakho Jua who presented several topics including Environment, Street Vendors Act 2014, Human Rights, National Food Security Act 2013, Consumer Rights, Food Safety & Standard Act 2006, the release stated.
