Kohima, June 5 (EMN): Joining the rest of the world, Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) celebrated the World Environment Day (WED) in its office premises, where KMC Administrator, Kethosituo Sekhose said that WED is celebrated on June 5 annually since 1973 in order to raise the global awareness about the importance of the healthy and green environment in the human lives.
Emphasising on the importance of proper dumping of garbage, Sekhose has requested the sanitation committee of the 19 wards in Kohima not to dump garbage in the landfill at Lerie, Kohima. He said garbage needs to be segregated and salvaged first before dumping.
Informing that a recycling plant by SIPMU will soon come up, he hoped that it will be operational by June 2018. Hence, he said waste segregation is of utmost importance.
Marking the day, protective gears were distributed to all the sanitary workers under KMC and to all the sanitation committee of the nineteen wards.
The programme concluded with a pledge that reads ‘I pledge to segregate my waste in two dustbins, wet waste in green and dry waste in blue, as my contribution to the Swachh Bharat Mission.’
