Dimapur, July 29 (EMN): Having being observed that some business/shopkeepers are allowing footpath vendors to put up their wares near the entrance of the shops/establishments causing congestion and harassment to pedestrians, the administrator of Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), administrator, Kethosituo Sekhose has directed shopkeepers to prohibit the footpath vendors from selling their products outside their shops/entrance to the shops.
He also cautioned that any shopkeeper or business owner allowing the footpath vendors to sell their goods in their vicinity, shall be held responsible and will be liable to be penalized as per the provisions in the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001.
The administrator stated that it has been observed that footpath vendors constitute one of the main contributors of waste in the town and it is felt paramount to regulate waste disposal of the footpath vendors for creating a hygienic atmosphere.
He also said footpath vendors are also creating inconvenience in the movement of pedestrians and at times even meeting with accidents owing to occupation of maximum footpath space by the vendors.
Sekhose also reminded that the Kohima Muncipal Council (KMC) under section 58 (c) of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 is duty bound to serve the public by Sanitation Conservancy and Solid Waste Management and is empowered under Section 61 of the Act to take necessary action towards fulfilling this duty.
In order to keep the Kohima Municipality clean the support of the stakeholders particularly the public and the business community, is a necessity.
