DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 25: EXPOUNDING that countless factors had contributed Naga society to a state of redundancy, Secretary of Land Resources, Y Kikheto Sema, today made a clarion call to admit ‘our fault and rectify’ accordingly to bring about real changes relevant to the present context. “Let us admit our shortcomings and faults and have the courage to call ‘Spade a spade’ and rectify accordingly; then only real change will take place in the society,” Kikheto said this while speaking as the guest speaker at the 62nd Annual Session-cum-Freshers’ Meet of the Kohima Sumi Students’ Union (KSSU) held at The Heritage, Old DC Bungalow, Kohima, on the theme, “Socio-political impact: Redundancy to relevancy” on Saturday. Exhorting the students, Kikheto said entering college is only the beginning of road to their career and that vital milestones needed to be covered for achieving the goals ahead. He also urged the students to be more humble as they climb the ladder of success in life and contribute their due share to the society. Indicating the general tendency of Naga society to deviate from truth in any situation, Sema maintained that Naga society has become a pretentious society to claim credit without doing the jobs. He, therefore, asserted that ‘We need to first change ourselves from such shameless acts.’ Stressing on the importance to preserve the flora and fauna, he urged upon the union to learn from other tribal students particularly by citing an example of the Angami Students’ Union (ASU), who are actively involved in environmental issues. Also emphasising on the electioneering system, the students were told to go back to their respective places and propagate the critical need for cleansing election system in the State. Speaking about shortage of teachers in rural areas, the Secretary asserted that unless the mentality changes towards serving in rural areas, the same will continue no matter how many more teachers are appointed by the government. He urged upon the students to give importance to their mother tongue which forms part of their identity and culture. During the programme, KSSU felicitated freshers, while the Kohima Sumi Totimi Hoho felicitated meritorious female students and successful female candidates of competitive examinations. The students also took a pledge on clean election initiated by the NBCC in the second session. Dr. Vinito Chishi, President of Kohima Sumi Hoho; Hekani Jakhalu, Advisor of YouthNet; Khehoshe Ayemi, Branch Manager, Impulse Marketing; and James Swu, Composer & Conductor, Music Lecturer of Patkai Christian College were the panelists in the second session.
