Kohima, Jan. 12 (EMN): The Khulazu Basa village, Phek district defended the title of 49th Chokri Area Games and Sports Association (CAGSA) football champions for three consecutive times, taking home the trophy permanently.
The nine-day long 49th CAGSA meet was held at Khulazu Basa village in Phek district on the motto 'friendship and progress.'
Defending champion K. Basa pocketed INR 1 lakh along with the trophy after defeating Chesezu village in a tie breaker. The final match between the two teams ended in 2-2 draw, even after the addition of extra two minutes. Team K. Basa took the lead after scoring two penalty shoot-out, while team Chesezu attempts failed to pass through the goalkeeper, resulting in a 4-2 loss.
In women’s football, team Thenyizu lifted the trophy after defeating host village K. Basa. The winner walked away with a cash prize of INR 20000. Meanwhile, team Phusachodu won both the basketball and volleyball in women’s category. Khulazu Basa won the second place in basketball while Thenyizu was placed second in volleyball.
For men's category, Thenyizu team won both the basketball and volleyball match bagging INR 20000 each. Rukizu came in second place at men basketball while Chetheba Town won second place in volleyball.
Additional director of SIRD Dr. Veluo Shijo was the guest of honour for the closing ceremony. In his speech, he encouraged the gathering to be self-reliant and independent economically. Shijo was of the view that taking sports as profession can help players earned their livelihood. Adding to that he encouraged them to extend possible help to develop their respective village.
He hoped that the players has benefited from the CAGSA meet and urged them to maintain discipline and good in their endeavours. Shijo also gave away the awards to the winning teams, and individual during the ceremony.
Thipuzu village walked away with the group champion. As for the individual champion, Cuvoto Medeo (Khulazu Bawu) and Veralu Kezo (Kikrüma) won the men and women category, respectively. Lütüzo Keyho from K. Basa village secured the highest scorer title with four goals. Pfüsazo Keyho also, from the same village won the best goalkeeper while Khrüzovoyi Nyekha from Chesezu village won the best player.
During the sports meet, new bearers were elected for the tenure 2019-21. Vekhayi Ruho was elected as the new president and Vethizo Thira as general secretary. The 50th anniversary of the CAGSA will be held at Phusachodu village in the year 2021.
