Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh congratulates Mirabai Chanu after her silver medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026
IMPHAL — Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Wednesday congratulated star weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu on winning the silver medal in the women’s 48 kg category at the ongoing Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 in Japan.
Khemchand interacted with Chanu through video conference from the Civil Secretariat in Imphal.
Congratulating her on the achievement, the Chief Minister said Chanu had once again made the country proud. He said her hard work, discipline and perseverance were an inspiration to young sportspersons, particularly the youth of Manipur.
He assured that the State government would continue to support sportspersons and provide all possible assistance to promote sports in Manipur.
Chanu, in her interaction with the Chief Minister, said she was happy to see the people of Manipur supporting her and standing by her.
Chanu won her first Asian Games medal by lifting a total of 198 kg — 87 kg in the snatch and 111 kg in the clean and jerk — to claim silver at the Nagoya City Trade and Industry Centre.
The medal is reported to be India’s first in the women’s 48 kg category at the Asian Games since Karnam Malleswari won gold in the event at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games.
