Soukhrie and Sechü won top titles at the 62nd Wrestling Meet of Western Angami Youth Organisation held at Khuochiezie Local Ground, Kohima.

KOHIMA — Kevizhakho Soukhrie emerged champion in the senior category while Thejasezo Sechü clinched the Under-15 title at the 62nd Wrestling Meet of the Western Angami Youth Organisation (WAYO), held at Khuochiezie Local Ground, Kohima, on Friday.
In the senior grand finale, Soukhrie defeated Seyiejalie Gwirie in two straight bouts to lift the title. Sielie Chüsi secured third place and Zasevikho Meyatsu finished fourth.
In the Under-15 category, Sechü defeated Metseilhoukho Zhünyü in the final to become champion. Vimezeto Zinyü placed third and Vikohelie Khate took fourth.

In terms of prizes, the senior champion received INR 1 lakh, the runner-up INR 60,000, third place INR 45,000 and fourth place INR 30,000, while quarter-finalists received INR 5,000 each. In the U-15 category, the winner received INR 10,000, second place INR 7,000, third place INR 5,000 and fourth place INR 3,000. A total of 64 wrestlers competed across both categories.
During the inaugural programme, Kovi Meyase, Commissioner and Secretary to the government of Nagaland, acknowledged the Naga Wrestling Association for expanding the sport across tribes and for introducing Naga wrestling at the national level, including recent participation in Goa and association with United World Wrestling.

He said sports are among the world’s largest industries and offer significant employment opportunities, noting that combat sports and mixed martial arts are gaining popularity, with wrestling being a key component. He also emphasised the need for proper training, diet, coaching and management in wrestling.
Meyase appreciated the visionary leadership of past wrestling pioneers and called for continuity in preserving wrestling as both a sport and tradition.
Theyievilie Suohumvü, president of the Western Angami Public Organisation, commended organisers and officials for supporting the players and said the tournament helped youth interact and build camaraderie. He also wished success to selected wrestlers who will represent WAYO in upcoming competitions.
