KG Kenye has been declared elected unopposed to fill up the vacancy in the Rajya Sabha for the State of Nagaland as there was only one candidate till the last date for filling up of nomination paper and accordingly, no poll was conducted.
Informing this in a release, Returning Officer N. Benjamin Newmai stated that the Biennial Election to the Council of States was notified on 4th March, 2016 and the last date for filling up or nomination paper was on 11th March while security of the nomination paper was taken up on 12th March.
Meanwhile, a separate release issued by Newmai informed that KG Kenye is from Chizami vilage as candidate from Naga People’s Front (NPF) Chizami, Phek, Nagaland.
The 60-member state Assembly has 48 NPF, 4 BJP and 8 Independent MLAs.
While BJP as an ally of the NPF-led DAN government has extended support to the NPF nominee for the lone seat, the eight Independent MLAs are also with the NPF. Election if necessary was to be conducted on March 21.
The lone Rajya Sabha seat from Nagaland had fallen vacant following the demise of sitting MP Khekiho Zhimomi in November last year. His tenure was to end in April.
