Kohima College, Kohima (KCK) celebrated its 54th cultural-cum-literary day on March 11 at the college courtyard with Dr. Theyiesinuo Keditsu, assistant professor of English, as the speaker on the theme ‘Cultural integrity.’
The college, in an update, informed that the programme was organised by the Kohima College Students’ Council (KCSC) and Cultural Cell of KCK.
Speaking on the theme, Keditsu emphasised the need to research, revive, reject and reinterpret (4Rs) on traditional culture. She stated that equating everything from the past as regressive and modernity with progressive values is harmful.
“What do we want to keep? What do we want to do away with? And what can we conserve by modifying?” she asked.
She advised to take the best of tradition and modernity and create more inclusive practices, which embody ethical, moral values and enrich lives.
Stating that understanding and respecting one’s own culture is the beginning of understanding and respecting other cultures, she appealed to make best use of such programmes to foster and value each other’s culture saying, it would bridge the differences and create empathy.
The college’s vice principal, Keneilesa Neikha, delivered the welcome address and Meribeni, girls’ welfare secretary, delivered a short speech in commemoration of International Women’s Day. The programme was chaired by Sameer Khati. Cultural presentations included a dance by the Zeliangrong troupe, a flute performance by Sogwalo Seb, indigenous song by the Chakhesang students of KCK, a folk fusion song by Arola and Akhrienuo and an ethnic fashion show.
