- DIPHU — Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday
announced an amount of INR 50 lakh for construction of an auditorium-cum-Karbi
cultural centre at Purduwa Kharpati in Ri Bhoi district, Meghalaya.
- The Meghalaya CM made the announcement on the concluding day
of the three-day golden jubilee celebration of the All Meghalaya Karbi
Association (AMKA) held at Purduwa Kharpati, some 300 km from Diphu.
- In his address, Sangma said that, “The Karbis have been a
part and parcel of Meghalaya from its inception. Today I made a special mention
of Karbi leaders who stood with our leaders during the Statehood Movement. It
was great seeing the display of the vibrant culture of the Karbis today. Our
culture and traditions form our identity and must be preserved.”
- He also announced INR 50 lakh for construction of a cultural
centre in the area to ensure future generations learn about the heritage and
culture of the Karbis.
- The CM also acknowledged the contributions made by former
Chief Minister DD Lapang toward the development of Ri Bhoi district, and
as one of the founding members of AMKA.
- Deputy Chairman of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC),
Avijit Kro, the guest of honour, urged that people of both the states
(Meghalaya and Assam) to respect each other's territory without any
disturbances in the border areas.
- He also appealed to the Meghalaya government to ensure equal
development in Karbi areas, on par with other areas of the state, and to issue
land pattas to the residents.
- During the celebration, the past and present leaders of AMKA
were felicitated for their contribution to the organisation and Karbis in
Meghalaya.
- Earlier on April 1, the jubilee celebration was inaugurated
by the MLA of Nongpoh, Neralbon Syiem.
