The Karbi Welfare Autonomous Council has been constituted under the Karbi Peace Accord, with Dr. Sarsing Engti Kathar appointed as its Chief Executive Member.
DIPHU — The Karbi Welfare Autonomous Council (KWAC) has been constituted following the Peace Accord signed among the Centre, the Assam government and leaders of six militant organisations from Karbi Anglong district. The council has been formed for the welfare of Karbi people residing in the plains of Assam, as provided under Clause 3.6 of the accord.
A 26-member autonomous council was constituted on Saturday with Dr. Sarsing Engti Kathar appointed as its Chief Executive Member (CEM).
To mark the occasion, a felicitation programme was held at Gamariati near Kathiatoli in Nagaon district.
Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Dr. Tuliram Ronghang, attended the event as the chief guest.
Addressing Karbi leaders and community members from different parts of the state, Dr. Ronghang said peace has returned to Karbi Anglong and other conflict-affected areas following the sustained efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
"On behalf of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and the entire Karbi community, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister and the Chief Minister," he said.
Dr. Ronghang also thanked the Assam government for allocating INR50 crore to the Karbi Welfare Autonomous Council in the state budget presented in the Assam Legislative Assembly, describing it as the first such budgetary allocation made to the council.
