Diphu, Aug. 14: Hills State Demand Committee (HSDC), Karbi Students Association (KSA-Simeon Rongphar), Students Youth for Justice (SYJ), Karbi Nimso Chingthur Asong (KNCA) and United Karbi Youth Association (UKYA) have opposed the 72nd Independence Day celebration on August 15, as without granting the Autonomous State for Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao under Article 244 (A) of the constitution the celebration will be incomplete.
In a press conference held here at the HSDC office on Tuesday, the HSDC general secretary Laichan Engleng said, “Without granting Autonomous State for the people of the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao under Article 244 (A) of the constitution, it would be incomplete and the HSDC including the KSA, SYJ, KNCA and UKYA have boycotted the celebration on August 15.”
Laichan further told that the constitution has given equal rights and opportunities for all communities and tribes, but for Karbis and Dimasas the hill tribes living in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao are still being deprived.
The Article 244 (A) enshrined in the constitution for granting of Autonomous State has been provided, but still after more than three decades of mass movement for achieving the Autonomous State it has not been granted. This is neglect by parties in power at the central government.
While KSA President Simeon Rongphar also said it’s a constitutional right and should be made for the hill tribes of Assam. Until the Autonomous State is granted or fulfill will get full freedom for the hill people and Independence Day will be meaningful for them.
