Diphu, Sep. 25 (EMN): The 17-year armed struggle in the three hill districts of Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao (NC Hills) by Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) ended with the organisation's disbandment at Diphu Club on Saturday.
On March 22, 1994, a Karbi insurgent group Karbi National Volunteers (KNV) was formed with present KLNLF Chairman, P Dilli. On Sep. 12, 1994 another armed group Karbi People’s Front (KPF) was also formed. The two groups merged to form the United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) in 1999. However, due to difference in opinions, the two groups split into UPDS (pro-talk) headed by Longsodar Singnar and the KLNLF (anti-talk) faction headed by P Dilli.
The KLNLF came under Suspension of Operation on (SoO) in Feb. 11, 2010. During the ceasefire period after having several rounds of talks with the Central government the KLNLF on Sep. 4, 2021 with other five extremist groups signed the Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) with the state and Central government.
During the disbanding ceremony the chairman of KLNLF, P Dilli hoisted the organisation's flag and paid homage to departed leaders and cadres. The chairman thanked the Union Home minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, CEM of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), and the people of Karbi Anglong for making the peace accord possible.
The general secretary, Thong Teron said, 'We have carried out armed struggle to fulfil the aspirations of the hill people and during this period we faced several obstacles. After we laid down the arms, the government of India invited us for talks. After several rounds of talks, we could sign the peace accord for peace and development in the hill districts. Now as our armed struggle has ended, we can all go home to be with our wives, children and family members and live peacefully to start our lives afresh'.
Meanwhile, out of the six Karbi armed organisations of Karbi Anglong, three factions have already disbanded.
