DIPHU — With the ongoing eviction drive targeting illegal settlers in parts of Dhubri and Goalpara districts in Assam, concerns have emerged that displaced individuals may attempt to resettle in other areas.

In light of this, Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Dr. Numal Momin, visited Bokajan Railway Station on July 24 to assess the situation and review possible influx through transit routes.

Momin held discussions with officials from Bokajan Police Station and the Railway Protection Force (RPF), stressing the need for strict monitoring and heightened vigilance over new arrivals.

Meanwhile, the Karbi Students’ Association (KSA), Diphu District Committee, has urged village headmen and residents to remain alert and report any suspicious individuals entering their areas.

At a press conference held on July 24, KSA-DDC president Sonasing Rongpi said that with the eviction drive displacing several people, there was a real possibility of them seeking shelter elsewhere, including in Karbi Anglong.

Two days ago, suspicious movement was reported in Bakulia, Manja, Borlangpher, Bokajan, and along the Dimapur road in Karbi Anglong. Villagers should keep a watchful eye on unfamiliar faces and report them to the appropriate authorities, Rongpi said. He also called on Village Defence Party members and village headmen to closely monitor such developments.

He stressed that it was the responsibility of all residents to prevent the illegal entry and settlement of outsiders. Neighbouring states like Nagaland and Meghalaya have already issued alerts to prevent such entries, he noted.

Citing demographic changes in Dhubri, Rongpi claimed that the district, which was once Hindu-majority, now had a Muslim majority population due to migration. He warned that similar changes could happen in Karbi Anglong if the community was not vigilant. “The state government was compelled to issue gun licences to Hindus in Dhubri. If we are not cautious now, it will be difficult to remove illegal settlers in the future,” he added.

KSA-DDC secretary Mohesh Teron and members Jonason Bey and Jamowel Terang also addressed the media.
