Thirty-nine journalists from Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong received the Chief Minister’s Goodwill Gift at a ceremony held in Diphu.

DIPHU — Thirty-nine accredited and government-recognised journalists from Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong were presented with the Chief Minister’s Goodwill Gift on Thursday in recognition of their work in news reporting.
The ceremonial presentation was held at the office of the District Information and Public Relations Officer (DIPRO), Diphu.
Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) in charge of Art and Culture, Health and Family Welfare, and Information and Public Relations, Surjya Rongphar, was the chief guest. In his address, he appreciated the role of media in disseminating information and said the government relies on journalists to publicise welfare and development programmes.
Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations (Hills), Zahid Ahmed Tapadar, said the CM’s Goodwill Gift was meant to bridge the gap between the government and the media, acknowledging journalists as an important platform for public awareness. He also informed that the state government has introduced a health scheme for media persons, along with a media fellowship and one-time grant.

Senior journalist Sonju Bora spoke on the challenges faced by print media in the era of social media, but maintained that newspapers remain important as documented records. He said the goodwill gesture showed that the government recognised the work of journalists.
President of the District Press Club of Karbi Anglong, Diganta Teron, urged the KAAC executive member to follow up on the promised allotment of land and construction of an office-cum-guest house for the press club.
The CM’s Goodwill Gift included a mobile handset, a diary, a pen, a book on the life of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika, and the book One Atal Avichal Agragami – Assam.
Among those who received the gift were senior journalists Sonju Bora and Kamrul Khan; Kiri Ronghang, editor of Samphri Kimi; David Hanse, editor of The Arleng Daily, and its sub-editor Diganta Teron; Debojyoti Bora of Dainik Janambhumi; Dipen Bora of Prag News; Augustine Teron of The Hills Times; and Danielson Bey, executive editor of Thekar, a Karbi daily.
