- DIPHU — A delegation of Karbi
Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) led by the chief executive member (CEM),
Tuliram Ronghang, on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to Ram Mohan Naidu
Kinjarapu, union minister of Civil Aviation, Government of India, pertaining to
the Greenfield Airport project in Karbi Anglong as assured in the 2021
Memorandum of Settlement (MoS).
- For the airport project, an alternative
site has been proposed at Kheroni in West Karbi Anglong district.
- Ronghang in his facebook page wrote,
"Today, I submitted a memorandum to Shri Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu,
Hon’ble Minister of Civil Aviation, Government of India, reiterating the urgent
need to implement the Greenfield Airport project in Karbi Anglong, as assured
in the 2021 Memorandum of Settlement (MoS). Despite the commitment made by the
Government of India, roadblocks in funding allocation have delayed the process.
However, abandoning this project is not an option."
- To honour the MoS and ensure air
connectivity for the hill districts, KAAC has proposed an alternative site at
Kheroni, which is more centrally located and could serve the districts of
Hojai, Nagaon, North Cachar Hills, West Karbi Anglong and Karbi Anglong. The
shift would not only make the project more commercially viable but also enhance
connectivity for a larger population.
- "We urge the Ministry of Civil
Aviation and the Government of Assam to take proactive steps in fulfilling this
long-awaited promise. The people of Karbi Anglong and its neighbouring regions
deserve better connectivity and opportunities," CEM expressed.
