[dropcap]M[/dropcap]oving out of the customary church practices, the youth department of Kohima Ao Baptist Church (KABA) on Tuesday launched an initiative to create awareness about ‘restoring the environment,’ among citizens, to ‘make the state capital cleaner and environmentally healthier.’
The church department has dedicated the year to working toward a cleaner and greener Kohima town through the initiative of its youths. The mission has been christened ‘KABA CARE’ (encompassing the church and the theme of the initiative) with the motto ‘Caring God’s Own world’ from Colossians 1:16.KABA’s Youth Director Tiatoshi Longkümer said that the main purpose of KABA CARE was to create awareness among the citizens of Kohima to protect and restore the environment from further destruction. This can be done by promoting locally-relevant environment friendly activities, he said.
He also announced that KABA CARE volunteers would be cleaning the route along TCP gate to NHAK junction in Kohima town to create awareness amongst and encourage citizens to make Kohima cleaner.
Kohima Municipal Council’s administrator, Kovi Meyase, has said that maintaining cleanliness should be a collective effort of all the citizens while individuals should be willing to step out of their ‘fencing’ to make the state capital greener and cleaner.
Lauding the efforts of the church’s youths, Meyase said that the municipal council would extend cooperation and support to the initiative.
Nagaland Baptist Church Council, youth secretary Vikuo Rhi appreciating the initiative aspired that such actions should be followed suit by other churches.
Marking the formal launch, KABA CARE volunteers also distributed bookmark printed with faith exercises to: “Minimize your vehicle use, instead, walk or use public transport on your way to church and office, whenever possible”, “When going shopping carry your own shopping bag and say ‘NO’ to plastic bags”, “Plug our devises from electric sockets when not in use, e.g. TV, Computers, Mobile phone chargers etc.”, “Pick up any thrash and dispose it off in the right place”, “Use paper judiciously: use both sides of the paper”, “Avoid and reduce food wastages”.
The volunteers also conducted cleanliness drive at NHAK compound after the formal launch.
