Diphu, Aug. 20 (EMN): The Fishery department of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) distributed fish seedlings to the beneficiaries of Lumbajong, Singhason and Dhansiri MAC constituencies at Aquacentric Park in Diphu on Friday.
Chief Executive Member of KAAC, Tuliram Ronghang distributed the fish seeds to the 100 beneficiaries.
Stating that there is great potential for fish farming in Karbi Anglong, CEM Ronghang said, "In one bigha of fishpond, 1000 fish seeds can grow and the income from one bigha fish pond in one year is INR 4 lakh. The consumption of fish is very high in Karbi Anglong, but the production is very less. Fish is being imported from other districts of Assam and from Andra Pradesh. Local farmers can take up fish farming as it is very profitable", CEM informed the farmers present.
CEM also said from next year KAAC would dig fishponds and provide fish seeds to farmers, who are interested in taking up fish farming.
MLA Rupsing Teron, the executive member of KAAC and in charge of Fisheries said the department has three hatchery tanks at Dillai, Borlangpher and at Rainabil, Kheroni, West Karbi Anglong. With proper care, these three hatchery tanks can provide sufficient fish seeds to farmers. He also informed that from August 25, fish seeds in other MAC constituencies would be distributed to local farmers.
Earlier, during the welcome address the joint director of Fisheries (Hills), Bablusing Kathar told the farmers that the fish-breeding season is between April to July 15. During this breeding season, people should avoid catching fish in order to protect different species of fish especially the local ones that have become endangered due to extensive consumption.
