Diphu, Dec. 20 (EMN): The Land and Revenue department of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has carried out an eviction drive of illegal settlers at Dudu colony of Block-3, Lahorijan close to Nagaland border inside Karbi Anglong on Monday.
The colony, which is 210 bighas being occupied by illegal settlers is between Lahorijan Tea Estate and Langrijan river of Nagaland border. There are a total 214 families with 4,650 populations.
For smooth conduct of the eviction drive the district administration, law and order authority and para-military forces had assisted it. Officials and staff of the Forest department, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary and health departments were also involved.
To avoid any traffic disturbances during eviction drive, Nagaland police closed the border gate at Khatkhati to prevent vehicular movement on NH-39 road from Dimapur moving down to Bokajan and the Assam police stopped the vehicles entering from Bokajan to Dimapur during the eviction drive.
During the 6-hour eviction drive, earth movers pulled down temporary structures and concrete buildings. One of the illegal settlers said local taxes were collected by Nagas from Dimapur. There is an electricity connection and one madrasa inside the colony.
In the evening, a press conference was convened by Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Chief Executive Member (CEM), Tuliram Ronghang at his official residence, wherein he stated that for several years the illegal migrants have been settling in Dudu colony without any land pattas. After proper discussion with DC and Law and Order authority the eviction drive has been taken up.
“The colony is occupied by illegal Muslim migrants with fake land documents. The Land and Revenue department and KAAC authority found no land pattas being issued by the Land and Revenue department of KAAC.”
The CEM also said that after serving notice, around 40 families have vacated while some families still remain. 214 houses were evicted with a total population of 4,650.
The remaining houses will be evicted within a short time. Some have reportedly shown a stay order of Gauhati high court. However, as it is clear that they have settled illegally, they will be evicted.
Earlier the SP, Karbi Anglong, Pushpraj Singh said that precautionary steps are being taken during the eviction drive so that no untoward incidents are created.
