Diphu, May 20 (EMN): A member of Parliament of third-Autonomous District parliamentary constituency in Karbi Anglong is convinced that the politicking in Karnataka following the state’s elections was undemocratic.
Birensing Engti, the member, offered his opinion about the Karnataka situation, to media persons at his residence on May 20.
Engti said that in a democratic country like India, the government was the people’s government. Whoever secures the single largest majority forms the government. But in case of a hung assembly, he said, the government invites the first party to stake claim if it has the majority to form the government. If a party fails then a second party can be invited. But in Karnataka it did not happen, Engti explained.
Election should be conducted free and fair ‘with no corruption,’ said Engti. What happened in Karnataka was undemocratic, he said. The governor knew well that the second party had majority but was not given any chance, he explained.
Engti appreciated the steps that was stated to have been taken by the Supreme Court to stop horse trading stating it to be illegal. He cited the examples of states like Manipur, Meghalaya and in Nagaland where the majority party stands as opposition to the ruling government.
