DIMAPUR — The Joint Action Committee (JAC) on NH-2 (Niropen to Hammock Resort) expressed serious concern over the ongoing road construction along National Highway 2 (formerly NH-61) within Wokha town, covering Niropen to Hammock Resort, citing poor quality, lack of supervision, and disregard for public interest.

Despite continuous monitoring, JAC found the progress and execution unsatisfactory.

In a press release, it stated that the construction was being carried out without a qualified technical team and with no visible supervision from the National Highway Authority. The committee said such negligence raises questions about accountability and commitment to public welfare.

JAC pointed out a recent attempt to fill potholes during heavy rainfall, terming it technically unsound and counterproductive. On September 14, JAC members observed labourers filling potholes without proper machinery, seemingly to create an impression of progress rather than ensuring lasting repair.

JAC urged that roadwork be carried out only under suitable weather conditions and with proper equipment to ensure durability and safety.

The committee also highlighted incomplete paver block installations, improper finishing of stone slabs, incomplete drainage and culvert systems leading to waterlogging, and blacktopping during rainy days. It stressed that these practices compromise both durability and safety.

Further, it said, the absence of coordination among departments and inadequate supervision have compounded the problems. JAC called on the concerned departments and district administration to conduct strict, periodic inspections to ensure quality control and accountability.

At the same time, JAC appealed to the public for cooperation, especially during the laying of stone slabs on road flanks, as public participation is often necessary for smooth execution. It noted that in several cases disturbances caused by landowners have delayed the work.

Civil societies have also been urged to engage in ensuring that construction is carried out to the required standards. JAC encouraged citizens to promptly report defects or areas needing attention, noting that committee members cannot be present at every site at all times.

Emphasising that public infrastructure must serve the community and not individual interests, JAC described the road as a lifeline for all and stressed that its proper construction must be ensured through collective responsibility.

The committee reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights and concerns of citizens and said it would continue to closely monitor the situation.
