[dropcap]A[/dropcap]rbitrary and despotic behavior of a government is checked by the Opposition parties in democracy. But “to work for the Naga solution” the principal Opposition Congress legislators have joined the treasury bench. Hence, ours is a democracy today that may not fulfill its namesake.Plainly speaking, sans the Opposition the usual ruckuses and pandemonium during the assembly business will be assuaged. Whatever the people at the helm desire will just be okayed without much effort after a simple formality in the Assembly session. This is also to say that no one will be policing technically in such time when the government becomes despotic. Yes, we do have pressure groups and the media but they have limitations for the reason that they cannot gain much leverage in the absence of the Opposition. They can be only moral policemen but again if the other party is insensitive to moral bindings then the question of relevance of the former crops up. In such eventuality the danger lurks.
Coming to the formation of the Joint Legislators Forum (JLF), in the earlier DAN-II regime it was the case of the two very difficult political warring groups giving up their interests and ego (sans the effect of berths and perks) just for the Naga cause. The spirit of those legislators (in the DAN-II regime), both from the Opposition and the ruling, was laudable. To the world, two conflicting parties agreeing for one cause i.e. the Naga political issue, has more weight than friends agreeing to do together something.
For the DAN-III regime, the task is much easier now to constitute such a platform, thanks to the absence of the Opposition.
Meanwhile, to say the least, we cannot ask for more if Joint Legislators Forum (JLF) is constituted for it is the best platform for the 60 legislators to push for the Naga solution.
